The ACL Keely Lake Advocacy Award The Norma Goldman Memorial Ancient Attire Contest
Keely Lake was a member of NCLG for many years, culminating in her service as Chair before her untimely passing. The American Classical League set up a new Keely Lake Advocacy Award in her honor as a person who gave tirelessly to advocate in Washington and for her colleagues and students. We can clearly feel the impact she made on the Classics profession. The NJCL-NCLIS Board in Washington wrote, “Keely was a wonderful colleague, a passionate language advocate and, as a person, she was devoted to her students and…her father.” She was, in short, a person who could not say No to serving, and did so in many diverse ways.
Norma Goldman was a classicist to the core. She was devoted to her university and students and co-authored a text and many ancillary materials. She was also an archeologist who conducted detailed studies of Roman lamps, Roman shoes and spent years researching all ancient attire. She became famous for sewing many replica clothing ensembles based on scupltutre and paintings and then holding fashion shows at conferences and events. Her colleagues became her models! In her honor, NCLG member Zee Poerio instituted the Norma Goldman Ancient Attire Contest, held annually for ACL members.
